Explainer Videos: Statins
I was brought in to work on this project by my friend and lead motion designer, Isaac Somers. The client had a grant to make a website helping patients navigate the pros and cons of taking statins for their blood pressure. They decided a series of bite-sized animated videos would make the information much easier to digest and therefore more likely to be consumed.
Matching The Style
Isaac did a tremendous job developing a style for these videos. Since the scope of the project involved dozens of animated videos, he decided to go with a very simple cartoony style that would make it easy to produce content in volume. A touch of animated texture and some roughened edges at a low frame rate added a touch of life so the videos feel more personable and less sterile. I made sure to match Isaac’s style to a T so my videos fit with the rest of the series.
Storyboarding Simplicity
Since Isaac had already built a large library of assets for the other videos that he had animated, I saved significant production costs by incorporating as many pre-done drawings and symbols as possible into my storyboards.
The little walking people in the taxi cab scene only had to be animated once and then they were re-timed and duplicated to create a whole crowd. Plus, they’re pretty cute, right?
